HCS SB 718 -- PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
SPONSOR: House (Berkowitz)
COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on
Education-Elementary and Secondary by a vote of 16 to 2.
This substitute requires every public school to ensure the
recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance at least once a week in
every student's class. Students are not required to participate.
FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.
PROPONENTS: Supporters say that the recitation of the Pledge has
fallen by the wayside in recent years. By requiring schools to
offer it, students will be reminded that patriotism is a quality
that we should all aspire to.
Testifying for the bill was Senator House.
OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
